Values, words and phrases

Hawaiian values are incredibly important to us at Kā'anapali Beach Hotel, where our culture is expressed in our relationships with each other, with our guests and in the ways that we honor our ancestors and ʻāina (land).

Our values determine how we think, how we act and, above all, what kind of a life we live. Here, at “Hawaiʻi's Most Hawaiian Hotel,” we strive to hoʻohānai (nurture) these values daily.

A perfect example is the importance that we place on ʻohana (family) in Hawai’i—where loving and caring for your 'ohana comes first. The spirit of looking after each other, as blood relatives or not, means that our work colleagues, our neighbors and members of our community all become part of our extended ‘ohana and once a guest stays at Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel, they immediately become ʻohana too!

Aloha (hello, goodbye, love) is the most famous Hawaiian greeting but did you know that aloha kakahiaka means “good morning” and aloha ahiahi translates as “good evening?”

If you’d like to learn more easy and friendly Hawaiian greetings, download our list of Hawaiian greetings and practice them around Maui and in conversations with our staff and other hotel guests!

Putting the words together into Hawaiian phrases is simpler than you might think! The structure might be different, but with a little bit of help and some practice, you can learn some useful phrases that might come in handy during your stay on Maui.
