29th Hula O Nā Keiki

The 29th Celebration of Hula O Nā Keiki will be held November 8-9, 2019 at Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel. Hula students from Hawaiʻi and around the world are invited to compete through interview, dance, chant, and costume categories.

The Akoni Akana Perpetual Award, identifying the kumu who best demonstrates the value of Poʻokela in preparing for Hula o nā Keiki, was awarded to ‘Iliahi and Haunani Paredes of Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi. The Akoni Akana scholarships, which are awarded for the intent of furthering each individual’s education in Hawaiian culture through college, hālau, mentorship programs, or other fine arts were awarded to Maikalanikamealoha Eli Keohuhu-Kanana Wong of Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi and Jaelyne Ipo Leolani Navarro of Hālau Hula Kauluokalā.

Rules

Hula O Nā Keiki Rules 2019

highlights: 

  • This competition is in compliance with the Hawai‘i State Department of Agriculture in the prohibition of any and all plants and flowers restricted to inter-island transfer. To reduce the spread of Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death, ʻōhiʻa lehua is strictly prohibited from use in the competition, and participants are REQUIRED to find alternatives.
  • Hālau are only allowed to enter one (1) entrant in the soloist kaikamahine division, one (1) entrant in the soloist keiki kāne division, and one (1) couple in the pālua keiki division.
  • Entrants in the pālua category must dance hula kahiko (a brand new division), hula ‘auana, and oli. Entrants in the pālua category do not have to be a specific or different gender (i.e.: participants can be both kaikamahine, both keiki kāne, or a keiki kāne and a kaikamahine).
