The award winning hula halau, Kanoeau Dance Academy, presents dance and chant to weave Hawaiian myth into magic.

Traditional Hawaiian Luau

Dancer at a luau In early Hawaii, it was the custom to celebrate auspicious occasions with a feast. Whether it was the birth of a child, a victorious war, a successful harvest, or the completion of a new home or canoe, the Hawaiians took time to honor their traditions and to share their bounty with friends and family.

Called ahaaina (gathering for a meal) in ancient times, the term luau came into favor much later, and refers to the edible taro leaves that are used to wrap many food items prior to being placed in the imu (underground oven).

Today's luaus are still a celebration of life. A time to share traditional foods, enjoy songs and dances of early Hawaii and to give thanks to our family, friends and guests from other cultures.

Old Lahaina Luau

One of our favorite recommendations is the Old Lahaina Luau, which is held nightly next to the beach just south of the Lahaina Cannery Mall. The luau received a "Keep It Hawaii" award in 1999 from the Hawaii Visitors Bureau, and has wowed the New York crowds annually since 2000 at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade with their Hawaiian float. Guests are greeted with fresh flower leis before enjoying a tropical drink. The evening's highlights include Hawaiian cultural demonstrations, an imu ceremony*, generous buffet and their award-winning presentation of Hawaiian music and dance. You can opt for regular tables and chairs or traditional island seating on grass with cushions and low tables in front of the stage.

*The imu ceremony showcases a traditional Hawaiian cooking method using the ground for an oven, which imparts both steaming and smoking for a uniquely delicious flavor. At the luau, the imu is opened so guests can view one of the main entrées, a whole suckling pig. The Hawaiians call this favorite luau staple, "Kalua Pig," meaning cooked in the imu.

The innovative Feast at Lele made its debut in 1999 at the beachfront of 505 Front Street. It pairs cuisine and entertainment from Hawaii, Tonga, Tahiti and Samoa in memorable fashion.

Ulalena

Ulalena - Maui Myth and Magic We proudly boast that Ulalena at the Maui Theatre in Lahaina, was recently recognized as "Hawaii's Best Show & Attraction" by the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau. Ulalena is a spectacular show, with world class staging, a talented cast and an exciting score. A must see.

Children and adults are drawn into the spirit of the show, during which the 10-plus performers draw on audience participation. The 75-minute performance explores how Hawaiian myths and legends were joined by the many diverse ethnic heritages that make up our local culture today.

Warren and Annabelle's

An intimate evening in Lahaina Town with a magical twist is headlined by this unique duo. Sleight of hand artistry by magician Warren Gibson is presented in a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. The theater is six rows deep, ensuring that audiences have an up-close view of the action.

Upon arrival, patrons seek the secret entrance into Annabelle's Parlor, where a resident piano-playing ghost entertains them. Audience members can request songs or ask questions to which she responds on her piano. Gourmet appetizers, cocktails, specialty desserts and coffee are served in the parlor. The magic show follows.

Maui Film Festival

Film buffs will find much more than they expected here on Maui as well. The Maui Film Festival is an on-going weekly event featuring the best of Hollywood, often before the films are in general distribution, as well as foreign and independent films that receive little commercial notice. The screenings are offered at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, a magnificent performing and visual arts facility. The Pacific's biggest screen and a sound system that is second to none make for a memorable film experience. In addition to the weekly presentations the Festival also stages an annual event patterned after traditional film festivals. Attended by the Hollywood glitterati, the Festival's tag line - "Cannes, Sundance, Telluride, Venice, Maui" - says it all.

Pookela Singers

Kaanapali Beach Hotel's Pookela Singers Not surprisingly, home-grown Hawaii entertainment is a major item here as well.
